Yes and oil keeps them that way. What happens when a country runs out of their primary source of revenue, oil? Well, they have to start developing their people instead to produce a GDP. The best system in the world for generating revenue from the smarts of the people is a free market and a Democratic government. It's no accident that people like Putin, Chavez, and Achmadenijad rise to power when oil prices are high. They use oil as a weapon to buy people's loyalty. When oil prices are low, the virulence of dictatorship subsides. That is just an observation I've made as I've watched the ebbing and flowing of oil prices over the decades. It's a correlation that more people should start understanding, because it is at the heart of our desire to see a more peaceful world arise around us.
