I don't know about that... I think a fixed basket of major industrial commodities is likely the best way to benchmark inflation.

(Or even the consumer-focused "McDonald's Big Mac index".)

Gold is TOO SMALL and TOO EASILY MANIPULATED by the relatively large Central Bank holdings. (Has been for decades, I'd wager, on purpose.)
