Google’s Data Culture Drives Designer Crazy — and Out

Beat me to the punch Robert.

But it confirms to me, what I already knew, there is a problem at Google.

The new Google maps re-design sucks eggs. Really poor re-design. In fact I'd call it stone stupid. The Google advanced search re-design sucks too to a lesser degree but is also stone stupid.

Having a BA from UCLA in design I understand this phenomena all too well. Engineers with distain for design. They ruined AltaVista and Netscape among others. They ruined a company I worked for too. Company had a dynamite product they spent 2 years developing, with a crap front end that put them out of business within a month of it's release. They had 47 million in venture capital but refused to spend a few thousand on usability design studies.

You'd think a smart company like google would learn from the past, or from companies who've made a living on good design like Apple or Adobe.

This attitude goes back to before the days of Xerox/PARC when the dwebs at Xerox let Steve Jobs steal their mouse/interface design, and Microsoft quickly realized the importance of usability.

Google at first seemed to understand but now this is in doubt.
