Wednesday, April 30, 2008 Conservatives Don't Like Supreme Court Decision On Sniffing Dogs For Enhanced Police Work OTTAWA -- The Conservatives don't like a Supreme Court judgment that restricts use of drug-sniffing dogs and are hinting they'll draft legislation to expand such searches. Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day says the government will follow the ruling but must also protect high-school students and the general public from drug pushers. At what point are right wing ideologues going to realize that Canadians do not want authoritarian encroachment in our society? Canada's Supreme Court has clearly ruled that law enforcement 'fishing expeditions' do not advance individual and civil rights in this country. The use of dogs as a screening tool is something that authoritarian and totalitarian regimes employ at the cost of individual protection under the law. A right wing thinker will retort that 'if you are doing nothing wrong, you will have nothing to worry about'. Stockwell Day wants new laws to justify the enhanced use of sniffing dogs in order to 'protect our youth from drugs'. The potential for abuse by the police is real.
