Keep Mexican truckers out....
March 23, 2009 at 8:13 AM

The Seattle Times is either woefully misinformed or intentionally dishonest about the Mexican truck issue.
The Mexican government and transportation industry has been unable to comply with NAFTA and U.S. DOT criteria, specifically; Mexico does not have uniform, government mandated driver training, certification, drug testing, criminal or accident record process mandated by the NAFTA treaty.
Clinton's own DOT ruled Mexican drivers ineligible to drive past the current 20 mile zone on this basis over a decade ago, and Mexico has failed to create driver regulation in the meantime that would create standards comparable to the U.S. and Canada as defined by the NAFTA treaty, not to mention U.S. and Canadian federal law.
The pro-Mexican truck advocates are actually insisting we ignore this aspect of the treaty and let Mexican drivers in anyway - the equivalent of letting any American hop in an 80,000 eighteen-wheeler and run our highways without any training, criminal background driving record or drug testing check.
I've had first- hand experience with border freight, and there's no significant disruption of imports or exports.
American and Canadian drivers are, and have always been allowed to drive anywhere they want in mexico to deliver our exports.
The truth is - trailers are typically "exchanged" at the border and delivered to their respective destinations with virtually no disruption of service or "reloading" from one trailer to another.
The REAL goal of pro-Mexican truck advocates is two fold.
1. Mexico wants to give it's citizens another opportunity to work in the U.S. and Canada.
2. Corporations want to reduce transportation costs by replacing the American and Canadian driving force with cheaper Mexican drivers, and effectively by-passing U.S. and Canadian driver safety regulation.
