I haven't seen, or even heard about "The First 48". Is each episode pretty much separate from all the others?

Definitely try it. Each episode is stand alone and takes either one or two murder cases -- typically from Memphis, Miami, Dallas, or one of a couple other cities -- and follows it from the time the call comes in until it is [usually] solved.

The focus is on the "first 48" hours, a period during which the murder detectives say is a crucial period in solving a murder.

I've been watching it for several years now. The overwhelming points that I take away from it are (a) these detectives know what the hell they're doing, and (b) the total disregard for human life a lot of people have.

And one other thing. If you're going to commit a murder, leave fingerprints if you must but whatever you do, don't use a cell phone.
