Malaysia: 14,000ha in Pengkalan Hulu earmarked for tin ore, minerals prospecting

Some 14,000 hectares in Pengkalan Hulu have been identified for minerals and tin ore prospecting, said senior state executive councillor Hamidah Osman said today.

She said the state government would receive five per cent royalty for the minerals and tin ore mined.

A 30-year mining concession has been awarded to Rahman Hydraulic Tin Sdn Bhd, she said.

However, whether the area had tin deposits would be known only in four to five years, she told reporters after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Minerals and Geoscience Department Malaysia and Rahman Hydraulic.

Minerals and Geoscience Department director-general Datuk Yunus Abdul Razak signed the MoU on behalf of the state government while Rahman Hydraulic director Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Ajib Anuar inked for the company.

Speaking to reporters after the signing, Dr Ajib said his company would invest RM5 million for prospecting tin ore in the area.

"Prospecting work will start as soon as the company received the licence from the state government," he said.

He said the company would use high technology techniques for the job as "we need to break rocks.

"If there are minerals in the area, not all the 14,000 hectares will be mined as only a small area is needed to mine tin," he added.

Rahman Hydraulic has been involved in the country's biggest hardrock tin mining operations in Klian Intan, Hulu Perak, since 1907.
