I really don't see how this argument can hold water.

After all, at the time Clinton left office, SS & Medicare real deficits totaled well over $25 Trillion.

But I know what you mean. The truth of the matter is they weren't sustainable.

They were temporary gains from the runup in the .com bubble, and as you say, what goes up will surely come down.

The reality is that what we're seeing today is in significant part a move to an information-based economy. Banks are collapsing and will be replaced by virtual facilities over time. Middle-men are going away. Manufacturing in this country is essentially a thing of the past.

We need to be building our own TV sets and printers and computers and all the rest, but we can't compete because labor costs are too high here.

The only solution is a reduction in our standard of living to that of the rest of the world IMO.
