Tim, all those red lines on the map are freeways.

I'm aware of that, but on that scale there is a decent distance between freeways over most of that map. Even in the areas that look congested there can be miles between the freeways.

If you're 11th in ridership and 2nd in population, that's not an impressive ratio

11th highest RATE, not 11th in ridership.

Rate is independent of the size of the city. If the ridership rate is 11th out of 50 then its well above average whether your the biggest city or number 50. The rate is equally significant whatever the size of the city, on this point the size of the city is irrelevant.

the freeways would be on top of each other.

Not according to the map you linked to.

As for density the city itself your site says LA is the 9th most dense which is high density not low, and by some measures LA is well above 9th.

Measuring the whole "urbanized area", for example Los Angeles--Long Beach--Santa Ana, vs. New York--Newark (which also includes parts of CT) its 1st among large cities (although not by much over San Francisco--Oakland (which probably should be San Francisco-San Jose-Oakland

demographia.com

This site also lists LA as 1st among American cities (even if its 90th on the list of world cities), its also includes the surrounding urban area, not just the city proper.
