SS has run over $3 trillion in surpluses since 1983 yet he claims SS to be one of the biggest culprits in our debt, almost all of which has been accrued since 1983. What's the accounting behind that illogic? His point is unfunded liabilities, which as you note have nothing to do with the current debt, since we have not incurred the "unfunded" expense yet. In the strictest sense, we could abolish (hyperbole on my part) the programs and the problem is gone. Of course this is not going to happen, so rationally speaking, we will have to reform the programs, probably through a combination of higher taxation and reduction of benefits, and again the problem will be solved. He's a demagogue...he hates anything that requires the country to behave like a unit...social programs at the top of the list...so he exaggerates anything he writes on the topic. Notice that he won't tell you how these social problems should be addressed...his mind doesn't work that way...he has health care and that's all that matters to him. Al
