If you took the money spent on microprocessor development and compared it to battery development over the last 40 years it would probably be on the scale of four orders of magnitude.

Yep but not anymore. Some of the best minds in the country are working on battery tech. There is going to be progress, it might be incremental or it could be a huge breakthrough... but in 10 years I wouldn't be shocked to see double the density in the same weight/space for 1/2 the price.
