In Canada we call it a tax on goods and services. I am fine with that. I don't think we really need to get into the arbitrary 'value added' aspect. (of course, in Canada we got exactly what you said, the GST was simply added on top of the income taxes)

A simple tax on economic output would be much more fair than a tax on income or capital. And would likely help the economy in the process.

It would also solve the problem facing America where 1/2 of the population pays no tax. If everyone had to pay the GST/VAT everyone would be a bit more concerned about gov't spending.

I had not been overly positive on this 'Fair Tax' idea previously, but once the numbers of people NOT paying tax currently became more available to me, and since Obama is giving away the cart AND the horse, I think it is time to change this tax system and make every American a vested interest. Canadians too.

It also makes it harder to buy votes which will be the biggest obstacle.
