Unions had power when international trade was small and the US led the industrial world, particularly after World War II when we were the only one left standing.

With the advent of high efficiency containerized shipping, union strength was sapped as the global wage arbitrage took hold.

We are not going back to the days of isolation, so unions are not going to stage a comeback in the private sector.

The things that will bring about a resurgence of the middle class are education, job skills that are in demand and relevant in the future, and a thirst for savings and thrift.

In the past 40-years unions have helped sap productivity through unproductive work rules, worked as an adversary towards management, and drove companies to seek alternatives to union labor. Management is not always innocent either, but the unions are disruptive to the normal operation of the labor market, where wages are paid at the going market rate and people are free to choose where to work.

Unions helped bring about workplace safety, but OSHA and other state agencies can do that work without the union stewards.

The days of graduating from high school and taking a job in the factory at $25/hour plus full retirement benefits after 30-years are over with. People need to get a clue and move on.
