As far as point and shoot go, I'd go with Canon (of course I got a Samsung, but that was based on features and price).

My daughter had a Nikon that had several problems. She now has a Canon and it has performed flawlessly and takes great pictures.

A good friend who I think takes professional quality pictures, uses a Canon EOS Digital Rebel. He speaks very highly of it.
