Grace: Food is a much more basic need than an antidote.
g: yes, and a much more general one that doesn't require you to harm anyone to get it (at least here in the states). no matter how badly you need something, if you have to harm someone to get it, it is a greedy act.
---------------------------
Grace: You need food, clearly not everyone gets enough food in the world, so is your obtaining food by whatever legal means a greedy act?
g: it would depend on the circumstances. if you can be more specific, so can i. legality does not preclude violence.
-------------------------
or getting or keeping it with violence".. violence being physical or non-physical.
Grace: If you come into my house uninvited to take something from me, I will use violence to protect my home and my person.
g:my entering your home uninvited to take something is a violent act. you can respond in kind. i see nothing wrong in protecting yourself.
--------------------------
Grace: According to your definition, I'm being greedy not sharing my house and my belongings with you and using violence to protect my property.
g: no, you have a right to defend against someone being violent to you.
--------------------------
Grace: Surely I don't "need" everything in my house to survive.
g: whether you need it or not, it belongs to you and you have the right to keep it.
--------------------------
Grace: Anyone growing up in a third world country would question what it was I did to deserve all the stuff I have.
g: anyone that would ask such a question doesn't deserve an answer.
-------------------------
Grace, i think there are degrees of greed. from almost nothing to very high. the more we are able to see greed within ourselves, the more it becomes our responsibility as to how greedy we are. we can't do anything about another's greed, only ourselves. |
