Since I've done my share of California bashing, it's only fair that I speak up when I find a Cali wine I like:

2003 Pedroncelli Dry Creek Valley Bench Vineyards Merlot (11.99):

Aroma of rubber (which eventually dissipates somewhat), cloves and pine. Blueberry shows up after the bottle has been open for a while. Tastes of leather and rhubarb at the beginning, later smooths out a bit and adds some blueberry and plum flavors. A very reasonable 13.7% alcohol level.

Pedroncelli has long been a reliable source of quality wines at reasonable prices, and this wine is definitely in that tradition. Has this wine been subject to the epidemic of what I would call manipulation that has plagued Cali wines? I don't know, but the traditional Sonoma flavors do show through. Regardless, at any price point under $15 I would be happy to drink this wine without asking a lot of questions.
