Michael, thank you very much. The waves in water corresponding to waves in the air did the trick for me---it helped me see something that is invisible, therefore intangible, therefore hard to grasp. I ran straight to the bathtub and the experiment worked perfectly except for the part where I had to persuade Madge to join me (she did not realize my sole motivation was knowledge). I figured that was one of the reasons you recommended two sticks; anyway it all worked out. Two little questions. Celluar calls always get connected to the wired world infrastructure at some point in their journey? It never happens 'through the air' 100% ? I thought there are places where the whole point of the wireless revolution was that wires would be impractical/inexpensive and therefore satellites, WLL, etc. could get the job done without need for wire at all. When one turns one's cell phone on, it tells some central computer somewhere (a) here's where I am, keep track of me, so I assume it is constantly transmitting even when a call is not in progress? and (b) if not on, the user is effectively saying, I'm out of the loop, do not disturb? This has all been mighty helpful, and again, I thank you. Will take Ramsey's advice and see if I can get the mighty Q to send me some educational info as well. Kind regards, Mike Doyle |
