John,
as far as learning options basics I suggest picking up a text book, it is the only thing that will give you an objective view. All the other books you'll find at a book store are for strategies for people who have some options knowledge.
You can find a text book at any university that has a Securities Analysis course.
Another okay reference is a pamphlet that your broker is required to send you when you request to open an options trading account. The booklet is titled "Characteristics and Risks of standardized options." You can get it through the OCC (options clearings corportation) as well. But all brokers are required to give it to you by SEC law if you open an account.
It is dry reading and focusses on risks, rather than explaining options.

Basically you need to know these terms:
CALLS vs. PUTS
SELLING vs. BUYING

If you really have a desire to know I can send you an email. Just leave your address.
