And you know that how? As a rider of MTA, how are you able to ascertain that its the workers' fault; that its anybody's fault? How did you come to that conclusion?

You have to be blind not to see lack of productivity, waste. If there are people doing nothing, it is not a management decision, it is a labor union forced rule that was written into contract.

Take any train. It has a driver doing nothing while the train is in motion


I don't understand. Is the driver supposed to leave the train once the train is enroute? Did you know that once a plane is airborne, the pilots put the plane on autopilot. Is that a waste of productivity? Should they jump out of the plane?

and the guy who opens door, who does nothing while the train is moving. So 100% of the time you have at least one of them not working.

This is new....the last time I was in NYC was the mid 90s and there was no one holding open the doors. When did it start and why did it start?

Take millions of dollars invested in replacement of labor inteninsive tokens with smart cards, that now 100% of riders use and can be purchased from a machine. That was supposed to eliminate 1000s of token booth clerks. They are still sitting there doing nothing...

Could it be that the card dispensers keep breaking down:

Apparently, MTA has had considerable problems with them.

The local papers and news stations followed the maintenance people and had reports on their (lack) of productivity. It was an outrage.

And what happened?

Now why is it that you feel you need to defend these excesses? BTW, Do you know who gets screwed by it the most? Those for whome the subway ride is the biggest percentage of their pay - the poorest people...

You're blaming unions when you have no real proof they are the problem. People also blame the unions for GM's problems. I think GM's problems much like MTA's problems and go much deeper. The managers who are non union are not doing their job. However, Rs rarely look at that part of the equation. That's why I am not so willing to jump on your anti union bandwagon.
