Yes, the rush to judgement on Stevens was inexcusable.

Were government, which has so much power already, allowed to bend the rules to achieve "the proper result", we can waive our rights as citizens goodbye.

Stevens probably did lose the election over this and while I think he probably had outlived his time in the Senate, what a mess this was. Had he won the election (which he almost did anyway), then the Senate was faced with possibly expelling him....but what it they had done that and then all this had come out!
