Ted,

I don't understand. Is the driver supposed to leave the train once the train is enroute?

...This is new....the last time I was in NYC was the mid 90s and there was no one holding open the doors. When did it start and why did it start?

Driver has a job of adjusting the speed, watching the lights. That job can pretty much be eliminated as well. They are running a pilot program on one line, where the driver just sits there and the train is being operated by the computer. But the whole thing is being stalled...

What I am talking about is the second person on the train, who is in the middle of the train and his only job is to open and close the doors. Kind of like the elevator man who used to open and close doors almost a century ago. So there are 2 people on each train, while in reality you need only 1 or 0.

Apparently, MTA has had considerable problems with them.

It's true that they are far from flawless, but they are a lot more reliable today than some 10 years ago when they were introduced.

You're blaming unions when you have no real proof they are the problem.

Low productivity, excessive wages, excessive benefits are the problem of MTA. Low productivity, excessive wages, excessive benefits and unions go hand in hand. So consider it proof positive.

People also blame the unions for GM's problems. I think GM's problems much like MTA's problems and go much deeper. The managers who are non union are not doing their job.

The managers are certainly not doing their job fighting the union in order to preserve the institutions they are managing. But that does not change the fact that the union is source of cancer, and if left unchecked, it will consume the body. Cancer cell hogs the resources available to the body. The more the cancer cells grow in size, number and power, the more resources they consume. Less and less resources are left for vital organs. In the end, the patient dies.

UAW represents a terminal case of cancer.
