Rsi_boy:

Intel has a cache poisoning problem and they didn't admit it. Those types of things come around to bite you in the ass eventually. Intel has also done some extremely nasty things. They have had management failures that only crimes allowed them to recover from them. Most of the side businesses they went into were complete failures. Without the x86 cash cow, they would have been bankrupt many times over. They may still lose it all. The antitrust lawsuit may hurt them badly. Antitrust decisions by governments could cost them dearly as well. Finally their CLA actions may force them to get out of the x86-64 CPU business and that may be the nail that bankrupts them. They have been running delaying actions on all three, but that time is running out.

Triumphs from being ethical and not sweeping problems under the rug. Others that hide those problem may look good for a while, but sooner or later they are found out. Criminals have it easier and can seem fantastic and great. Look at Madoff. For a long time he looked like a genius money manager who could do no wrong. His competitors looked like they were mistake filled catastrophes. Now that he has been shown to be just an extraordinary con man and a big criminal. Similarly Intel may be found to be an abusive monopoly and be broken up (it has been done before). When all of the court cases and government actions are done, then perhaps we can say who was making a long series of mistakes.

Has AMD made mistakes in hindsight. Sure. Hindsight being 20/20, they should have waited 6 months to do the ATI acquisition. It would have cost them 1/2 to 1/3 as much. By that time it was evident that the R600 was just too far for the time. Had the R600 been the roaring success that the R670 was, the writeoffs would not have been all that large. But it is much harder to see that with foresight. Intel signing with RAMBUS was a disaster waiting to happen. It looked good on paper to some, but it didn't work in the market when push came to shove.
