Because you grew up in a communist nation, you have a bias that borders on hysteria with certain subjects. Unions are one of those subjects.

What I learned about the unions, I learned in the US. The US is a laboratory of what happens when the unions run amok. Kind of like the CDS department of AIG, except, the damage caused by AIG guys hit us like a dam bursting, whereas unions are like a death by water torture.

Your exposure to unions may have started in the US but you equate them to the communism you experienced growing up in Slovakia. They are not the same thing at all.

Just like mgmt whch can be good or bad depending on the company. Please stop painting everything with a broad brush.

Back in communist Czechoslovakia, there were unions, but they were largely symbolic, benign. In post communist Czech Rep. and Slovakia, he unions are still relatively benign. So it is within the realm of possibility for union to be not cancerous, or only pre-metastasis cancerous.

The unions in this country are hardly cancerous.

But the unions in the US are a different story. Public or private. And at the extreme level (not counting outright criminal longshoremen) is UAW.

Sorry. Not in recent history....the last 20-30 years. In fact, industry has broken the backs of unions.

And I repeat:

And one last thing......NYC does not run well. I find it nearly as inefficient as LA. It doesn't have to do with the unions but rather with the general attitude of the people and the overcrowding. Get out of NYC and you will save yourself considerable aggravation.
