IDC figures for last quarter:
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Strong growth continued in the personal computer market during the second quarter of 1997, according to preliminary data released today by International Data Corporation (IDC). Unit shipments worldwide rose 15 percent over the second quarter of 1996, compared to 15 percent year-over-year in Q1 1997. The U.S. market sustained the substantial growth rate recorded in the first quarter, posting second quarter unit shipment growth of 19 percent. "New technology and continued corporate investment drove sales during the quarter," said Kevin Hause, personal systems research analyst for IDC. "Market demand was bolstered by the introduction of Pentium II desktops, the sustained wave of business upgrades, and continued popularity of portable systems." Compaq retained the top market share position, both in the US and worldwide. Hewlett-Packard surged to the number three position worldwide, with 48 percent year-over-year growth in unit shipments. Dell continued its extraordinary growth, increasing worldwide unit shipments by 52 percent, and IBM posted solid growth to retain the number two spot worldwide. "Hewlett-Packard propelled itself into the top tier capitalizing on well-received portable products and very competitive pricing," said John Brown, senior analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Market Tracker program. "Strong sales in Europe also contributed to Hewlett-Packard's worldwide growth."
Market Highlights The US market had a robust quarter, with demand for new products reinforced by the strong economy. Sequentially, the market grew three percent, a healthy expansion given the strength of the first quarter. Commercial desktop sales more than offset the seasonally weaker consumer market, due to continuing business upgrades and demand for the Pentium II. Portables remained a high-growth area, again bolstering the overall growth rate. Other regions saw mixed results, with the key determinant being local economic conditions. The Asia/Pacific region turned in 14 percent growth, reflecting weak performance in some its largest markets, particularly Korea. Japan saw only moderate growth of six percent, as economic uncertainty, high prices, and a new consumer tax depressed demand. Western Europe posted better-than-expected growth of 11 percent, as large vendors used aggressive pricing to stimulate demand in the major markets.
Second Quarter Vendor Review Compaq reinforced its leadership position in both the US and worldwide, with impressive year-over-year growth of 38 percent and 42 percent, respectively. This performance expanded the company's market share and its lead over the respective number two vendors. Commercial desktops, servers, and portables were all in high demand, and the company leveraged its size and brand to create sizable growth in the otherwise difficult Western European region. IBM maintained the number two spot worldwide, increasing its market share sequentially. Portables led growth in both the US and worldwide, due to new products that were very well-received. Servers also contributed to IBM's growth in what was another strong quarter for "Big Blue." Dell again posted explosive growth, capitalizing on its operational efficiency and healthy demand in its core corporate market. Continued price aggression in servers fueled growth domestically and in Europe, where the company outpaced the market by a healthy distance. Despite the seasonally weak consumer quarter, Packard Bell NEC maintained its position as one of the top five vendors in the world. The company expanded its worldwide unit shipments by five percent over last year, which is noteworthy as the first quarter that the company has been able to show growth since the merger of Packard Bell, NEC, and ZDS. Aggressive pricing in Europe and completion of its corporate desktop rollout fueled Hewlett-Packard's commercial growth. A warm response to a new portable line that included a new value product also contributed to the jump in worldwide ranking from number six to number three.
