As far as the need for speed goes, I can give another simple example of the "need" for faster machines... I serve as a webmaster for an academic department at a university. I use a Pentium Pro 200 with 64 megs of Ram. Often, I need to change documents from LaTeX .dvi format (a wordprocessing program for scientists, engineers, economists, mathematicians etc) into Adobe Acrobat PDF using Adobe Type 1 fonts at 600 dpi for viewing on the web. A 20 page document which is about 80k in the dvi format gets altered into a 600k .pdf file that can be read by anyone on with the acrobat viewer and takes about *3-5* minutes to complete... Personally, I won't be happy until its done at the snap of my fingers...
