"WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee has given the red light to gambling on the Internet.

The Internet Gambling Prohibition Act was approved by the committee in a voice vote on Thursday. The bill would penalize any person who, while engaged in the business of betting or wagering, knowingly uses a communication facility for the transmission or receipt in interstate or foreign commerce of bets or wagers. This includes the Internet.

A person convicted of running such an operation would face up to four years in jail and a $20,000 fine. A gambler placing a bet online would face up to six months in jail and a $2,500 fine..."
