Auto executives asked Alan Greenspan for help, and the answer always was after you design some cars that will sell.

Auto unions often strike if they think the giants had a car that will sell like hotcake, not an Edsel.

Under Lee Iacocca, Chrysler revived from near bankruptcy by changing V8 engines to 4 and 6 cylinder engines from Mitsubishi. Then they had the miser series of cars both sports and sedans. The medium cars were designed to look like Mercedes.

So, Chrysler survived to do it again. GM also needed to change styling to sports(sporty) and sedans(low flying longer), not 1930s aerodynamic styling. Engines has to be 4 or 6 cylinders for fuel economy not necessarily hybrids using battery. Battery cars will need more maintenance cost.

so, the line is drawn in the sand, and the government knows how to get cars sold, by scraping cars on the lot and restyle and use economical engines.
