It was very heartening to hear Jim Nantz defend Coach Calhoun during the telecast last night. Jim and Coach Calhoun are good friends who I believe were introduced by Bill Mitchell (no relation) who owns a very famous clothing store in town called, aptly, Mitchells. Mitchells holds numerous fund raisers where Calhoun and Nantz unfailingly participate. When I met Calhoun recently, it was because Bill brought the coach to the local library to talk about his book. Very few people probably know that Nantz was a captain of his high school basketball team in addition to being a top golfer in college, so he really knows his stuff and it shows. I hope everyone gives Calhoun the benefit of the doubt because we need more people like him as role models for kids. And when Calhoun does his own fund raisers, his former players are only too happy to help. Can't beat that.
