Looking at some of the quake damage in Italy.....first, Italy can not be as quake prone as CA....those 13th century bldgs would have come down long ago. They are absolute crap...stucco blocks piled on top of each other with no reinforcement at all. Now I understand why the death toll is so high. Secondly, how do they rebuild? Do they just tear down the historic stuff and put in new? That seems to be the only feasible approach at this point. From some of the photos we're seeing...30-50% of the buildings are beyond repair. And what do you do with all those homeless people while they rebuild? What a mess.
