Hawk, do you have any grounding in probability theory? My God, man. You think the probability of a Coronal Mass Ejection, Asteroid, or Gamma Ray Burst are more likely to wipe out man than the Earth's atmosphere changing enough to wipe us out?
You really are not thinking straight. Just a thought experiment. Let's say we continue emitting GHGs and in 100 years, we start experiencing massive financial losses from all the impacts. We'll adjust, though. Let's say in 1,000 years the heating of the planet is enough to kill off our species. Right now, scientists say that an increase in temp by 7 degrees celsius will render half of the world too hot to live in. An increase by 10 degrees will render most places on the planet too hot to live in. It could end human life. If the planet warms by 1 degree celcius every century, it may be too hot for humans in 1,000 years. Roaches will survive, we may not.
So now let's talk about probabilities. If we continue with the status quo, we may have an existential event within 1,000 years. However, the last global extinction event from a meteor strike occurred hundreds of millions of years ago. So by definition, the probability of of a meteor induced mass extinction of humans is much lower than that of global warming induced extinction.
Hell, scientists are already reporting an acceleration of species extinction. We're already seeing non-human mass extinctions from climate change. Open your eyes. |
