Z, > And note that half of the "Gang of 14" were Democrats.

Well duh. It was the Democrats who were threatening filibuster. Without any Democrats in the "gang of 14," the obstructionism would have continued.

Basically it boils down to this. Anything popular at the time is going to get bipartisan support. That includes tax cuts and the Iraq War, which I remind you were passed back when the polls were in favor of both.

But anything unpopular is ripe for political posturing. The stimulus was unpopular, the budget is unpopular, and that stupid union power grab (euphemistically called "Employee Free Choice Act") is going to be hugely unpopular. The Democrats only want to appear "bipartisan" because they don't want to shoulder the entire burden of these proposals, but Republicans aren't buying it. Hence the Democrats have to resort to PR and cast Republicans as "obstructionist."
