Let's analyse Nokia.
Started first since it was not a fixed-line vendor.

Gained ground while the competition was busy selling fixed-line gear.

Cash in on phone as fashion statement

Mastered brillantly the handling of subcontractors.

Phones fashion accessory disappeared as emerging markets became the playing ground.

Infrastructure vendor of Rome-Paris-New York circuit needed to go where the tough vendors had always been (Middle East-Africa) as fixed line vendors

Could not do it alone. Decided to buy Siemens political muscle and emerging market presence

Discovered that that political muscle and emerging market presence came at a price.

Now in bed with an elephant as market is saturated and facing two challenges: Huawei coming to eat GSM club lunch and Ericsson cannot be anything but a mobiel compnay and is fighting for survival

Mobile device will not be THE device. It is going to be a lap top with a dongle. Mobile device will becoming quickly like a Casio watch which one can buy per Kilo.

GSM fat cows years are over. Technology historians will talk about it as an anomaly

And the killer. NSN has a size for a market that it is no longer there. Need to downsize and in the years leading to its return to insignificance, we will see only defensive strategies.
