The massive subsidies are in your head. Remove all real "subsidies" and we'd still have a big oil economy - less produced here but thats the big difference.

The impact of opec vs the US "oil subsidies" work in the opposite direction. OPEC policies are designed to produce high oil prices. Things like IDC and percentage depletion are designed to lower domestic production cost and thus work in the direction of lower oil prices.

All in all, though the oil market is pretty free. There are no government mandates requiring the use of gasoline, diesel fuel, etc. People use it because they're economical energy sources. Failure to admit that is a denial of reality.
