You could probably substitute any controversial social issue in any historic period and get a similar trend though the rate of change now is accelerating.

I imagine if we were talking about 1904 and the subject of interracial couples' marriages were to be the issue you might see a similar trend, but instead of 4 short years, it probably would have taken 30 to see that much change!
