I2 and Bob Rice,
Thanks. You've given me some excellent pointers.
I am not planning on ruling out all mutual funds. In fact, fund info would be an integral part of the show. What I would do though is to screen out the "rate my fund" calls down to perhaps one or two an hour. IMO, the only "flaw", if it could be called a flaw, in BB's show is when he gets bogged down by several callers in a row looking for performance figures on their mutual funds.
I2, you raised a very good point about potential liability. I think because of that, I would stay away from any table-pounding or strongly recommending any stocks on the show. Rather, what I had in mind was, during the monologue, going over some stocks that have been in the news in the past week, i.e. if IBM was up 12 points during the week, I'd go over why it ran up, and vis-a-vis when KO was getting knocked down, I'd go over the reasons why it was getting hit. If I actually mentioned that I was recommending a stock, I'd probably have to do it like I was stepping on eggshells, due to my own potential liability. The meat of the show would be the call-in portion. Then, occasionally I'd want to have a guest analyst or portfolio manager on the show, talking about what he/she likes. Heck, if I really wanted to get fancy, I could even have the Goddess on for a special appearance to hawk her books--I'm sure Barnes and Noble would sponsor the whole show on that week.
All in all, I think it would be a neat little show. The appeal of course is that there would be a lot of banter about individual stocks. I heard a show a couple of years ago that had the same format, but the guy's knowledge of stocks was pathetic...someone would call in asking about a stock, and the host's only reference material was an S&P Guide...you know, "Well, let's see, they make semiconductors and they earned $1.71 last year. Looks good to me..." What I'd want to do instead, is have the screener forward the caller's stock question to an assistant who would then pull up stuff like First Call, technical charts, etc., so that when the caller got on the air, I'd have all the info at my fingertips.
Again I appreciate the info and suggestions.
