Over history small minorities have been sold down the river by great powers espousing their "national interest". America has always been better than most but not perfect. No country can be. This is where i always get into it with Chris.
Some make the case that US national interest is on the arab side. American Jews and Israelis are well aware of the consequences for israel of such a move. So obama reaching out assuages some of the visceral fear jews may have, especially on paasover. Historically Jews have been sold down the river by nation-states except by the US and of course Israel. And of course the Netanyahu win makes this fear even more palpable because Likud in extremis is not a viable option for US to support. So we need reach outs by Obama, compromise by Bibi and a mutual understanding that the iran threat wont be papered over. Its real and growing but that should not prevent attempts at compromise on nukes as well as on mid east peace. At this point in history, if iran buys in to a grand solution, there are no other nations standing in the way. With iran onboard everything is possible, without iran more war is inevitable leading ultimately to some sort of nuclear exchange in the region. On this Passover-Easter we all should pray for peace but not be naive about iran for iran is at the same time both a state run by an apopolyptic sect and a potential modernizing economy at the same time. Over the next five years we need to wean them from their extremism, nukes and rejectionism by helping them become a stakeholder. Bush couldnt begin to do this much less understand the nuance. My man Obama can do both, i hope. Again for the right shelve the talk of war with iran and for the left prepare for the possiblity of war. Thats how we get thru the next five years perhaps finding a mideast at peace, much like Northern Ireland---not perfect but a good first step. thoughts????
