Who said the voters are logical?

Religious folks follow a set a "laws" from god, their leaders tell them this and they are instructed to live the word of god. The fact they live by those laws and bring them into their lives and even the voting booth does mean they are "prejudiced or bigots" - it just means they're living the way god told them to and being "good" Christians or Muslims. No need to hate them for this or call them names simply because you think it's illogical or wrong.

There is no other logical way to see it- there are "religious" ways to see it, but those aren't really germane in a secular country.

Of course it is - they vote.

We could, of course, bend to the time honored prejudices of the religious majority

Historically it's been societies in general, not just religious majorities. Societies don't exist long without children, it has practical origins.

I would rather not see this handled by the courts - I doubt they will endear the unconvinced to the issue. The voters are slowly reconsidering this at the state level - give it time and America is not some hold out on this topic - very few other countries are very "progressive" on this issue either.
