Amen! :-)

However, when a church extends beyond its own fences to impose its religious belief on others- as in the case of Mormons and Prop 8- they are going to incur reaction, which sadly may be violent.

Here I disagree to a point - they are still Americans and can assemble anyway they choose, the other side, as you call it, is doing the same in promoting their views - the violence was despicable.

For the most part, this sort of battle is fueled by ignorance and the omnipresent hatred of "the Other"

That's entirely untrue - the religious don't hate gays - they simply believe their lifestyle choices are wrong according to god.
