"Seems like those qualities would make people accept, not reject gay marriage."

How so?

Gay relationships are accepted in American culture, and by me personally. So this question, at least for the time being, is not one of acceptance or rejection. The question filters down to why is the term Marriage such a burning turn key issue.

Is it because of discrimination, segregation, or equality? No. Gays hold positions of honor in the highest echelons of society in numbers that dismiss such a complaint. If equal opportunity were an issue it would be that they have been elevated in high numbers that are unequal to other subcultures.

Integration and accessibilty is not an issue since there is no legal descrimination in public places, while there are private places that cater exclusively to people enjoying a 'gay lifestyle'.

What's left? The term Marriage identifies people embracing the Hetero-family values lifestyle. By annexing the word Marriage that would change to some extent but how is that being kind to gays? What does it give to gays that they don't already have? Nothing. What does it remove from the Hetero-family values subculture which they have and value? Their identity.
