I disagree.

There was a time when it was about the music.

If you've ever listened to Artur Rubenstein's recordings of the Beethoven concertos, you know what I mean. Or, for that matter, the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper & Abbey Road, or Joni Mitchell's Blue.

Totally about the music. In the case of Sgt. Pepper, the producer (Geo. Martin) still says he merely put them in the studio and said, "Do what you want to do" -- although, his expertise is apparent throughout if you listen to the individual track recordings before they were mixed.

I think this Madonna/Brittney Spears/ thing is a product of the last 20 years.
