Brokers said worries over the upcoming Sino-U.S. summit were present but muted. The meeting of communist China's president, Jiang Zemin, and U.S. counterpart Bill Clinton carries great importance for Taiwan, seen by Beijing as a renegade province.

''Investors have shown less worry as most recent reports have said the U.S.-China summit will not result in any conclusion that will jeopardises Taiwan's interests,'' said Nomura Securities research chief Ben Lee.

The trend-setting electronics set the day's tone, opening higher but encountering late selling to end with a 1.42 percent decline.

Microchip giant Taiwan Semiconductor (2330.TW) fell down T$4.5 to T$116.
