The harm or injury lies in the fact that civil unions offer only a subset of the protection of marriage in some states, and aren't even offered in forty of the fifty states. Perhaps you missed my posts stating that.

Only California, Colorado, DC, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island offer civil unions. (In California, they're called Domestic Partnerships, and they come with a few legal restrictions that don't apply to marriages, and don't confer 100% of the legal protections and privileges.)
