KAZAKSTAN
We erred a short time ago in saying that World Wide Minerals has a substantial stake in Kazakstan Goldfields Corporation (KGFC). It does not. Back in December/January, there was a tentative deal on the table whereby World Wide and KGFC would merge operations. However, for several reasons, the deal was never completed. Moreover, Kazakstan Goldfields does not own any of Atlas Corp or Cobre Mining Co., or vice versa.
On a related note, we're informed by representatives of KGFC that the settlement last week between Placer Dome and the Government of Kazakstan, when viewed within the prism of the Government's recent changes -- i.e. new VP, and bureaucratic reorganization -- indicates they may finally be getting their act together vis a vis, their treatment of western mining companies. Says one representative of the company, "Our view regarding our situation has always been that the management contract was illegally pulled. We also have heard that several officials in the Government of Kazakstan privately regard this situation as one which they will lose if it ever gets to the international Court of Tribunal in the Hague.
