Yes it would be important if that was what happened. But it wasn't. It is still important that they are having this dispute though.

Stevens said the statement was false, he didn't say Palin lied.

The statement may be false, I don't know. We now have differing versions of the circumstance. Even if the statement turns out to be false, Palin may not have intended to deceive her audience. The intention to deceive is fundamental to being a liar. There could be any number of valid reasons why Palin would have the wrong information or why her statement was wrong with out her having intended to lie. And Stevens might have gotten it wrong. We need more.

People speculate, or guess about causes and get things wrong. That's poor judgement for a public official but its not lying. Someone else may have explained it to her that way, going on the information she has is not lying. Although she should correct it if she finds out a mistake has been made. I would need more information before passing judgement. I know you don't, but we both know it isn't because of your ethics.
