He's five miles out of town and his house is set back. There weren't a lot of wide places in the road. My brother figured they thought they'd just slide it out of the trunk and be gone. His lights were off and he (like myself) suffers from insomnia and just looks out the window sometimes. He heard the car on gravel and then stood up to look out the window in the dark. Then one of them said "Hey, there's someone looking at us from that window." They drove off and presumably dumped it elsewhere. We have people dump bodies on our rural roads here in California (not far from where we live unfortunately). It's a turn off for me to live in the rural shadow of the urban footprint which is why we don't. The land and isolation (good skies for stars) are pluses. But I can always get in my car and drive to a better place than I own.

I know anecdotes aren't statistics, but it shows it isn't "unheard of" or "remote" or even "unlikely". I know too many people that have be accosted for one reason or another, usually minding their own business, with the only common theme of being away from most people. But the suicide and domestic violence statistics are irrefutable, which is while I'm home, the guns are locked up.
