Company Press Release

Oak Technology Announces New DVD Decoder with
Copy Protection

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 1997--

TroikaCSS(TM) Provides Enhanced DVD Solution

for PC, Consumer Electronics

Single-chip DVD Decoder and Presentation Engine with CSS

Adds to Oak's Troika(TM) Line of DVD Products

Oak Technology (NASDAQ:OAKT) further extended its reach into the DVD market with the
release of the TroikaCSS DVD presentation engine and decoder with CSS support. The
TroikaCSS fully supports the content scrambling technology mandated by the DVD Forum and
enables manufacturers of DVD-PC and DVD player products to comply with the copyright
standards and requirements of DVD content providers. This full-featured, single-chip solution
allows manufacturers to reduce costs by removing discrete silicon without sacrificing the full
multimedia experience.

Bringing the newest in entertainment and information storage technology to market, Oak's new
TroikaCSS integrates all the presentation and decoding functions in a single chip. The TroikaCSS
integrates key functions of DVD such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-1 video decompression, Dolby
Digital, MPEG-1 and Linear PCM (LPCM) audio decompression, sub-picture decoding,
audio/video synchronization, on-screen display (OSD) and demultiplexing along with copy
protection. Full-motion video editing formats such as Letterbox, Pan & Scan and unaided 3:2
pulldown are also supported by the solution so that studio-quality movies can be viewed on a
standard television set.

The TroikaCSS is the fourth member of Oak's DVD solutions family, following the recently
announced OTI-9800 DVD-ROM controller, Interactive DVD Browser(TM) software navigation
solution and the original Troika integrated single-chip DVD presentation engine. Oak has
system-level reference designs available that leverage the Troika silicon.

''We've been successful in our quest to deliver comprehensive DVD controller and navigation
solutions, and TroikaCSS is yet another example of this mission,'' said Vince Guaglianone, senior
marketing manager for Oak's Imaging Business Unit. ''TroikaCSS will bring the full-featured DVD
controller and presentation engine functionality of Troika, along with copy protection, to
manufacturers looking to capitalize on DVD for PCs and home electronics.''

TroikaCSS is compliant with available DVD-DSP and servo technology, and offers a glueless
interface to various DVD/CD-DSPs, audio DACs and industry-standard NTSC/PAL encoders,
thereby reducing overall system cost to OEMs and enhancing system design flexibility.

Available in a 160-pin QFP package, TroikaCSS will begin sampling in November. For more
information, please contact Vince Guaglianone at 408/737-0888.
