I suspect it's a bad thing with violent aggression being the outcome, most likely turned inwardly given the problems of external wars these days.
It's not like the olden days when the bosses in the cities could press gang the legions of spare young males, put them in uniform, point them over the horizon and say "sic 'em".
32 million spare young males roaming the streets of China could be a bit of a problem. Given the mating rituals of humans, it's actually more like 40 million or 50 million spare young males because many women would rather go without than accept third rate blokes. It's part of nature's eugenics strategy. >
Eugenics is, as you know, a very long term action by women in an evolutionarily active human context. All blokes outside Africa have a common father from only about 20,000 years ago [or maybe it was 30,000]. ALL the rest alive at the time had their DNA removed from the gene pool. That's pretty harsh going and quite rapid.
Women played a large part in that process. Not all of it of course because genocidal conquest has always been popular among males and forced on them by the exigencies of nature and limited natural resources. Plus there are accidents and bacteria and a million other evolutionarily active impacts on which DNA gets to show up in the generations still to be born.
The point was that with swarms of spare males in China, women there are going to be more active than usual in the evolutionary selection process. The spare males are going to be active to try to be in that selection process winners' list.
There won't be "THE indicator of success". Many variables will be successful for varying lengths of times. For every living being at the time of measuring success, being alive is the determinant of success. If there is just a single example of a particular gene, it is as equally successful as all other genes even if there are billions of a particular type of another gene. That one particular lonely gene might be the harbinger of all future humans [or what evolves from humans], just as we are all descended from that one lone bloke who strode out of Africa 30,000 years ago and the one woman who did the same 90,000 years ago.
More likely, olde-style genetic processes have reached their zenith and consciousness will be replaced with the descendants of Google, Skype, Globalstar, 450MHz CDMA etc while genetic engineering and selection takes over from Aztec style mating rituals and selection processes.
