Samsung Elec. Making More IC Mfg. Gear

October 27, 1997 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co.,
Ltd. is developing more components for semiconductor
manufacturing equipment.

This strategy means that Samsung Electronics is becoming less reliant
on imports of such components. Specifically, it has developed about
US$60 million worth of components.

Samsung and several domestic partners in 1995 started pursuing a
project to develop components for semiconductor manufacturing
equipment, a company spokesman said.

Samsung has reduced its imports of such foreign components to a level
of about US$160 million a year, from US$220 million in 1995.

In an effort to build more of its own equipment, Samsung will spend
US$33 million to US$55 million a year for its development program. It
seeks to cut such imports to a level less than US$110 million by 1999,
the spokesman added.

Among Samsung's major developments is a cathode component, a key
piece of technology used in the semiconductor-etching process.

Samsung said it expects the cathode component alone to create an
import substitution effect of US$11 million a year, while saving US$3.8
million in production costs.
