conclusion to date:
paris is most fun to visit, but will require many iterations over a lifetime, so must save and be able to lodge wisely, and having family and friends in paris is a must to add to the reasons of repeat visits
lech/(any sort of downhill skiing in europe) is a must-learn for the very young, so that they can crowd and mingle when they are older
german countryside makes sense only if have friends so situated, else might as well go italian, and

otoh, i find much similarities between britain and america than i do between germany and france, and i find much sameness between russians and americans, as claimed by cb ilaine, than i do between russians and french, or, for that matter, greeks and americans in general, as cb ilaine wishes
