I don't think one should forget 3Com in all this. They have announced an impressive array of GE products including adapters, switch uplinks (for their existing switches including the tens of thousands of Switch 1000s they have sold)and Layer 3 gigabit switches (SuperStack Switch 9000 and CoreBuilder 3500).

A lot of this stuff is slated to ship in November so I don't see Bay taking that much of a lead.

Gigalabs - don't waste your time (hey....I like to be contencious !). Overpriced products that don't really deliver the functionality people want. Their Layer 3 and multi-media capabilites (RSVP, IGMP multicast, 802.1q etc) are some way off from my understanding. A day late and a dollar short as good colleague of mine would say. And when do you ever read about them in the press like you do Alteon for example ?

My prediction for succesful start up GE companies is Alteon, Prominet, Rapid City (acquired by Bay...so already 'succesful'), Foundry and Extreme. Of these I think that Alteon and Prominet will be the next to be acquired. Foundry and Extreme may suffer from delivering me too products (what can Foundry do for example, that 3Com can't do with the CoreBuilder 3500 ?) The others are just also rans. Gigalabs don't enter the equation. A dark horse is Plaintree. I left them out because the are not a start up but they are in the process of re-inventing themselves as a backbone GE switch vendor. Go to their homepage and checkout the WaveSwitch 9200. Big box, nice feature set and just started shipping....this stock could fly !!!!!
